Rank Math is a free WordPress SEO plugin that handles titles, meta descriptions, schema markup, redirects and sitemaps. Setting it up properly takes about fifteen minutes and saves you from fixing problems later.

Step 1: Install and activate

In your dashboard go to Plugins → Add New, search for Rank Math SEO, install and activate. If you already use another SEO plugin, deactivate it first — running two at once causes conflicts and duplicate meta tags.

Step 2: Run the setup wizard

Rank Math opens a wizard automatically. Choose Easy mode unless you are an agency. Then:

Select your site type — Personal Blog or News/Magazine for most sites
Connect your Google account to pull in Search Console and Analytics data
Set the default schema type for posts (Article) and pages (WebPage)
Enable sitemaps, and enable the 404 monitor and redirections modules when asked

Step 3: Configure titles and meta

Go to Rank Math → Titles & Meta. Set the global post title pattern, for example %title% %sep% %sitename%. Do the same for categories, tags and archives — then set noindex on anything you do not want in Google: tag pages, author archives, attachment pages and search results. This keeps your crawl budget focused on real content.

Step 4: Check your schema

Open Rank Math → General Settings → Schema (Structured Data) and confirm the Article type is applied to posts and the Organization details (name, logo, social profiles) are filled in. Correct schema helps Google show rich results and knowledge panels.

Step 5: Set up the redirect manager

Enable the Redirections module. From now on, when you delete or change a URL, add a 301 redirect to the closest relevant live page. This is how you avoid 404 errors and preserve the rankings a page has earned.

Step 6: Optimise your first post

Open any post, click the Rank Math icon in the editor, enter a focus keyword, then write a title, a meta description (around 150 characters) and a short URL slug. The plugin scores your content and lists what is missing — internal links, image alt text, keyword placement. Fix the easy items, ignore anything that would make the writing worse.

Step 7: Submit your sitemap

Your sitemap lives at yoursite.com/sitemap_index.xml. Copy that URL into Google Search Console under Sitemaps and submit it. Google will start crawling your structure within a few days.
